9 Facts About The iPhone 7
The iPhone 7 has landed and important information about the new smartphones are starting to rear their heads from underneath the press releases. Here’s a breakdown of stuff you should know before you buy.
Removing the headphone jack gave Apple AAPL +1.05% two extra benefits: a 14% larger battery (bringing it up to 1955mAh) and giving it IP67 water resistance, Dan Riccio explains in an interview with Buzzfeed.
Yes, the headphone jack has gone. But, BUT, for those of you who aren’t so sure about the new Bluetooth Airpods, there is a lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack converter in the iPhone 7 box. Beware, if you lose it, it’ll cost $9 to replace.
The new $159 Airpods have a total 24 hours playback time, Apple claims. And, despite the new wireless standard and the W1 chip, they are Bluetooth-enabled and will work with other, non-Apple, devices.
Pre-orders kick off on September 9th and shipping starts on September 16th. The smallest storage model – 32GB – has doubled from 16GB. For U.S. customers, the pricing is the same from last year $649. So you’re getting an extra 16GB for free effectively. But, for U.K. customers, there’s a £60 price hike to £599.
The high-gloss finish on the new “jet black” iPhone 7 may look flashy, but it will scratch EASILY, Apple has admitted so. The Verge even has an picture of a scratched back at the hands-on of the launch event.
Despite the improved brightness and wider color gamut, the display on the iPhone 7 is still 720p. It’s the same resolution from the two year old iPhone 6. The display looks very good by most metrics but Samsung’s OLED 2k screens far outpaces anything Apple is offering.
On the iPhone 7 Plus, there are two 12MP cameras, one wide-angle lens and another telephoto lens, adding a depth of field effect and a 2x optical zoom ability. This is not dissimilar to the LG G5’s dual camera set up. Check out my G5 review on Forbes for more, but my conclusion was that the dual lens setup is a stroke of genius. My only gripe is the fish-eye effect of the wide-angle lens, hopefully Apple has done a better job than LG with this. Both models also have larger sensors and wider apertures, meaning 50% brighter pictures in comparison to the 6s.
Next year is the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. The iPhone 7 is very much a marginal update – save for the headphone jack removal – on the 6s, rather than whatever special Apple has planned for next year. Smart money is on big changes in 2017, perhaps wait until then to upgrade to get maximum value for your money.
